PennDOT to Begin Stage 2 of Route 422 Rebuild; Expect Delays

PennDOT begins stage 2 of rebuilding parts of 422 eastbound. Improvements will address commuter's safety, but delays are expected.

PennDOT will shift eastbound Route 422 traffic on Thursday, Sept. 26, reports The Mercury. The move is part of an $83.6 million project to rebuild 2.1 miles of the expressway. The rebuild will also replace bridges between the Sanatoga Interchange and Porter Road.

Motorists should expect the following restrictions:

Sept. 22–25: Single-lane pattern on eastbound Route 422 (Keim St. to Evergreen Rd.) from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m. for paving.

Sept. 26: Single-lane pattern from 9 a.m. to 5 a.m. for a traffic shift.

Sept. 23–27: Intermittent single-lane closures on westbound Route 422 (Evergreen Rd. to Armand Hammer Blvd.) from 4 a.m. to 2 p.m. for reconstruction.

PennDOT warns drivers of delays in work zones. Completion of Stage 2, expected by late 2025, will shift eastbound traffic onto rebuilt lanes, allowing westbound reconstruction to begin.

Improvements include enhancing safety with better horizontal curves, wider shoulders, and increased vertical clearance. Two bridges, including the one over Sanatoga Road and Sanatoga Creek, will be rebuilt and widened, while another over Porter Road will be replaced altogether.
