P.J. Fielding, a former all-Ivy League golfer at the University of Pennsylvania, was instrumental in helping under-the-radar Wyndham Clark win the U.S. Open, writes Andrew Beaton for The Wall Street Journal.

P.J. Fielding is a member at Los Angeles Country Club, which was the exclusive host of this year’s tournament. This allowed Clark to get well acquainted with the course through his friend before other pros even started arriving to test the grounds.

Fielding, who knows every inch of the course, caddied for Clark during his practice session a week before the tournament. He taught him the speed of the greens as well as how they break and how he should approach every hole. The two men played 18 holes that ended up resulting in 36 holes worth of experience.

“I felt like it was that in-depth,” said Clark.

The payoff for the underdog competitor was amazing. He is now a major champion. He also executed a series of gutty shots that helped him impress even the biggest skeptics.

“I feel like I belong on this stage,” Clark said afterward.
