Geno Auriemma, head coach of University of Connecticut Huskies women’s basketball team, went from not knowing the language when he first arrived in Norristown from his native Italy to achieving the American dream, writes Al Bruno for the Art Voice.

At seven years old, Auriemma started to quickly pick up English. Before long he began helping his parents, Donato and Marciella, interpret and negotiate in their new surroundings.

As he grew older, he kept helping by taking on more responsibilities, including interpreting tax statements and making mortgage payments.

His leadership skills also proved to be invaluable in his professional career.

While soccer was his first love, he soon became interested in basketball. He began working as an assistant coach at Saint Joseph’s University in 1978, before returning to his alma mater, Bishop Kenrick High School, also as assistant coach.

In 1985 he came to Uconn, where he led the team from only having one winning season in its history to winning 43 regular season tournament titles.

They also advanced to 17 Final Fours, posting six perfect seasons, including winning 11 national championships.
