Jefferson Health has announced plans to repurpose its 60-bed Elkins Park hospital into a site solely providing physical rehabilitation care. John George, in his Philadelphia Business Journal report, noted the onsite phase-out of acute care, general surgery, and emergency room services.

The shift in focus will enable MossRehab to expand inpatient physical therapy care in northeastern Montgomery County.

“Our acute care and emergency medicine services at this location have been underutilized and have created an opportunity to expand our inpatient physical rehabilitation services to better meet the needs of the community,” said Damien Woods, a Jefferson Health spokesperson.

“Inpatient and outpatient physical rehabilitation services are [forecast] to see significant growth over the next decade, both nationally and locally. We are in a unique position to address this growing need by leveraging the rehabilitation services provided by MossRehab at our Elkins Park campus,” he concluded.

Woods reported that Jefferson Health is working to retain all employees, deploying them elsewhere in the regional healthcare system.

The Elkins Park location has about 1,000 employees, 115 of whom will be affected by the realignment.

The full story on the Jefferson Health changes coming to Elkins Park is at the Philadelphia Business Journal.
