Philadelphia Sister of WSJ Journalist Captured by Russia Finds Ways to Cope During His Imprisonment

Philadelphia’s Danielle Gershkovich — sister of journalist Evan Gershkovich, who was arrested by Russian security services on espionage charges — is finding ways to cope with the uncertainty as she waits for news of her brother, reported Elizabeth Bernstein for The Wall Street Journal.

Evan Gershkovich, whose parents are Russian immigrants, was on a reporting trip for The Wall Street Journal when he was captured. Both the newspaper and the U.S. government vehemently deny the allegation that he was there on a spying mission.

Danielle is two years older than her brother. She recalled how he got interested in journalism and the unlikely source he found: Anthony Bourdain, the now-deceased American chef, author, and travel documentarian.

“He loved that Anthony Bourdain would expose himself to something new and talk to anyone of any culture with respect and curiosity,” said Danielle.

When he was hired by The Moscow Times in 2017, he moved to Moscow. He told his sister that the relocation helped him better understand the stories told by their parents about their homeland.

When the Russian invasion of Ukraine started, he was working for The Wall Street Journal.
