Christopher Allen, a Narberth native who died covering war stories in South Sudan, received muted responses to investigation attempts of his death.

Christopher Allen, a Narberth native and freelance war reporter died covering war stories in South Sudan more than two years ago, writes Charlotte Alfred for the HuffPost.

He started his journalistic career covering the Ukraine conflict while living in Donetsk in 2014. Over the years, he published articles in several prominent newspapers, including the UK-based The Telegraph.

Then in 2017, he decided to head to South Sudan to cover the ongoing civil war. He was embedded with the opposition military forces together with two Reuters photojournalists when he was shot dead during a raid in Keya.

With little known about the circumstances of his death, his parents have been appealing for an independent investigation for over two years. During that time they received muted responses from both governments and the journalistic community.

Finally, in May 2019, his case was taken up by a team of high-profile British human rights lawyers, who have requested an FBI investigation.

“We’re faced with huge information gaps that you’d never expect to see in a case like this,” said attorney Caoilfhionn Gallagher. “All the detective work has been done by his family, journalists, and lawyers.”
