The Vigil Mass at St. Margaret of Antioch Church in Narberth this Sat., Apr., 22 will be more than just the liturgical celebration of Third Sunday of Easter. As Mary Brown reported for Mainline Media News, it’s also the 100th celebration of the founding of the parish school.

In a stance more forward-looking than nostalgic, one spokesperson on the occasion was not a vintage member of the congregation but, rather, eighth-grade student Elizabeth Shea.

“Our teachers also make sure to remind us on how to be a follower of Jesus each moment in our daily lives,” she said.

She listed some of the school’s regular outreach efforts, including a “Souper Bowl” canned food drive for the needy.

An historic perspective came from former parishioner Victoria Donohue, who cited school traditions like an annual fireworks show from 1922.

Further, she mentioned school-construction milestones like its 1923 building code and the 1924 zoning ordinance.

Another vintage St. Margaret alum commented on the occasion: Rev. Kevin Gillespie, who went onto become the president of nearby Saint Joseph’s University.

“We children were blessed with so many graces in that splendid school located in that special borough called Narberth,” he said.
