Two students from North Penn School District have been recognized for their hard work with one of the nation’s most distinguished scholarships. Justin Heinze reported their accomplishment for the Montgomeryville-Lansdale Patch.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has awarded seniors Irene Chung and Jacob Yin with Corporate National Merit Scholarships.

Chung, a Hatfield native, won the Calmer L. Johnson and John W. Leslie ITW Scholarship. Her probable career field is chemistry and her award is supported by Illinois Tool Works, an Midwest industrial manufacturer that gives out the scholarship to a child of its employees.

Meanwhile, Lansdale native Yin, who is planning to study applied mathematics, received his award from the PwC Charitable Foundation. This Tampa, Fla., organization aims to “… support our people when in need and invests in emerging solutions to society’s greatest challenges in education and humanitarianism.”

The award amounts were not specified by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, but they typically range $1,000–$10,000 a year. They are also renewable for four years of undergraduate study.

Recipients of corporate-sponsored scholars are chosen by companies from students who made it through to the finale of the National Merit Scholarship competition.
