Mike McDermott, a Haverford High graduate with a talent for golf, kind of made it to the Masters, writes Marcus Hayes for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

McDermott was a “marker” April 7 for Masters player Mike Weir.

Weir lost his partner, Kevin Na, after nine holes April 6 due to illness.

The two-time Philadelphia Amateur champion has been on call as a non-competing marker at the Augusta National club for two years. This is the first time his services have been utilized.

And the 48-year-old, who also happens to be CEO of a Wayne financial planning firm, played a great game.

“I played pretty well,” McDermott, who carded four birdies, said. “It was fun.”

McDermott got close to the Masters once before when he reached the quarterfinals of the 2016 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.

But this was a historic game for the middle school pitcher who became a sharpshooting basketball player at Haverford High School, and a star golfer at St. Joseph’s University.

“It’s unbelievable. We’re just kids from Havertown,” his brother, Kevin McDermott, told the Inquirer.

Playing today is so much more about the type of person he is, even more than the type of player, Kevin added.
