NariYella, a 20-year-old Elkins Park singer with a powerful vocal ability, caught the interest of all four coach-judges on the Mar. 21 episode of NBC’s The Voice. Michael Tanenbaum reported her stunning debut in PhillyVoice.
A Cheltenham High School graduate, NariYella sang “One Night Only” from the Broadway musical Dreamgirls.
She performed during the blind audition portion of the reality competition show. In that phase, the four judges (coaches) — Kelly Clarkson, Chance the Rapper, Blake Shelton, and Niall Horan — signal their interest in a competitor by turning their chairs around for a look at who has caught their ears.
NariYella got all four celebrities to face her.
Chance the Rapper, the first turnaround, immediately tried to launch a conversation, but the Montgomery County performer was too taken aback to respond coherently.
“Hold up, let me get my life together, Chance, please,” she said.
Once composed, she told him, “I’ve been singing since I could talk. I’ve been taking it seriously for the majority of my life, the past decade.”
Coach Shelton gushed, “Your voice is actually shocking to me how powerful you are.”
More on NariYella, her education, and her career aspirations is at Philly Voice.
