The Penn Wynne-Overbrook Hills Fire Company station, shown here in its 1950s form, is about to be refreshed again.

Penn Wynne-Overbrook Hills Fire Company is getting a spruce-up that goes far beyond an exterior wash with an industrial-strength hose.

Lowe’s, the North Carolina home improvement brand, is celebrating National First Responders’ Day (Oct. 28) by choosing three fire-rescue stations nationwide and refreshing their quarters.

The Wynnewood company’s re-do is part of Lowe’s five-year, $100-million commitment to restore and revitalize key spaces in the communities it serves.

The impending work on the Penn Wynne-Overbrook Hills Fire Company building is being paralleled at firefighter locations in Montclair, N.J., and Bluford, Ill.

The Wynnewood firefighting crew dates to 1928, using one truck and a team of zealous volunteers.

Its fire station was built in 1931 at the intersection of Rock Glen and Manoa Roads, not far from Lankenau Medical Center. That structure has been expanded over the years, to accommodate additional trucks, renovate meeting rooms, and add sleeping quarters.

“These heroes show up every day to support communities across the country. They’re always the first to arrive on the scene and the last to leave,” said Marvin Ellison, Lowe’s chairman and CEO. “We hope to demonstrate our immense gratitude and appreciation throughout October with … ongoing service projects to improve the spaces they call home.”

The home improvement chain is also offering purchase discounts to first responders nationwide, available online.
