Plenty of Buzz Surrounds Phillies Fan/Barber in Plymouth Meeting
The Phillies have proven to be a team that’s a cut above others. And with any luck, it’s about to clip the Astro’s hopes of obtaining a set of 2022 World Series rings. Helping fans root for that outcome is Sal Giannone of Sal’s Barbershop in Plymouth Meeting. Beccah Hendrickson, 6abc, combed through the details of his story.
Giannone is not only a skilled barber, he’s also a massive Phillies fan himself. The walls of his shop are covered with pictures and memorabilia.
But the recent Phils’ victory resonates with him.
“I feel like all these Phillies teams are underdogs. Nobody believes in us. But we believe in us. And I know firsthand what it’s like to be an underdog,” he said.
It’s a stance he grew into as a survivor of both addiction and homelessness.
“My life wasn’t going on the right track. And then I found barbering. My grandfather taught me,” Giannone said.
Fans who sit in his barber chair wanting his “World Series special” walk out with a Phillies logo expertly carved in the hair on the back of their scalps.
Despite the cut’s recent popularity and flood of paying customers eager to get one, Giannone is putting passion ahead of profits.
He charges customers just $5 for the artistic work, happy to contribute to the overall sense of unity the team has generated.
