Public swings, hung from the trees at Morris Arboretum, will remain until the end of the month.

Morris Arboretum isn’t quite ready to bid farewell to Summer 2022 or the season’s general sense of playfulness. Its leadership is therefore presenting an opportunity for the public to enjoy a simple summertime pleasure, an outdoor swing. Vittoria Woodill breezed by to file the story for CBS Philadelphia.

Across the arboretum’s 92 acres, ten swings hang from on-property trees, freely ready to welcome a user. They’re spread out, encouraging visitors to walk to find them.

“Every time you sit on a swing, you feel like you’re six or seven years old. Especially in these huge trees,” Bryan Thompson-Nowak said. He’s the Morris Arboretum Director of Education.

“The thing we have here are these massive, amazing trees,” he continued. “And a lot of these trees people walk past every day. So, we wanted to draw people in, have them look up and get engaged with the swings but also get engaged with nature and trees.”

To blend some knowledge with the play, identification markers indicate the variety of tree hosting the swing. And the seats are carved with the name of the wood that produced them.

Quinn, a pint-sized visitor with two siblings, said of the public playthings: “I think it’s a good thing. It causes people to chat with other people and, like, friendships can appear.”

The Morris Arboretum swings, about which there is more information at CBS Philadelphia, will remain up until the end of Sept.

Riding on a swing may actually have health benefits for adults.
