Downtown Bryn Mawr.

In an assessment of Montgomery County’s oft-ignored backyard treasures rests Bryn Mawr, patiently waiting locals to discover for the first time or perhaps rediscover if it’s been a while between visits its high points. Carole Felton Shore collected them for Main Line Tonight

The town perfectly blends hip and artsy with sophistication, while enveloping all three with local history.

A good time to visit is Bryn Mawr Day on Sept. 10, when the town is celebrated by local businesses, restaurants, and institutions. Its flip side on the clock is Bryn Mawr Night, 13 days later on Sept. 23. It’s a three-hour, post-dusk celebration comprising shopping discounts, live music, specialty foods, and a signature drink, the Bryn Mawrtini.

Other must-see events include the Bryn Mawr Twilight Concert series, held at the Bryn Mawr gazebo; musical performances at Wolf Performing Arts Center; and the carillonneur performances at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, which get a ringing endorsement.

Shopping ops include stops at the family-owned and operated Camera Shop, Clover Market, and the Farmers’ Market with its local artisans, farmers, and merchants. More global merch can be obtained from representatives from different countries at Ten Thousand Villages, a fair-trade store.

The local dining scene is full of possibilities. Fiore Rosso, from award-winning chef Marc Vetri, is a solid recommendation. Avalon Bistro and its new-age French-Italian is another good choice.
