The North Montco Technical Career Center (NMTCC), Lansdale, provides unique learning experiences for area high school students. It enables them to explore potential careers in an experiential way, visiting workplaces for first-hand exploration of jobs that include construction, culinary arts, and engineering.

The site visits are augmented by classroom instruction, with the goal being industry certification from which a career can take off.

One NMTCC career-prep arrangement, however, is a precursor to a college degree. The allied health track sends students on a series of rotations at a local healthcare facility for the same style of first-person exposure to a job.

This track, however, needs a new partnering healthcare site. Its former arrangement was sidelined by COVID-19, and the now, as safety measures have eased, the center seeks a medical facility to fill the void in time for the fall 2022 semester.

The NMTCC allied health program is distinct because it partners with a working Montgomery County clinical or hospital.

In prior years, the program’s students received classroom instruction in healthcare theory and techniques. In addition, through a bi-weekly schedule of clinical rotations, they also experienced the advantages of working side by side with medical professionals in various hospital departments. These included Med-surge, ER, Lab, and ICU.

Peggy Bossert, RN, MSN and NMTCC’s allied health instructor, said, “The allied health program is a great way for students to solidify their direction of becoming health care professionals.

“This partnership benefits participating hospitals by generating community involvement and awareness. Students in this program can help support the participating hospital’s mission as a volunteer or help direct community members to useful healthcare information.

“The loss of the observational component, though temporarily, has impact, as this program inspires some of our best and brightest students.

“Every student that has had this experience to date has pursued careers such as a medical doctor, nurse, pharmacist, physician assistant, therapist, or similar. Most important, though, is that they return to this area after their training and add incredible value to our local workforce.”
