Wawa continues to bring its Delco and Philly goodness to the rest of the country, this time with plans by 2024 to open stores in North Carolina, writes Catherine Muccigrosso for the Charlotte Observer.

Wawa’s already listing 17 new store openings by the end of 2022 in Florida, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

“We are actively looking into potential sites for new Wawa stores” in North Carolina, but can’t confirm locations or timeframe, the company told the Observer’s news partner WSOC-TV.

North Carolina residents, specifically those in Charlotte, would have to travel 232 for their nearest Wawa fix, with the closest store in Midlothian, Va., near Richmond.

Wawa’s still in private hands, and currently has 900 locations in Delaware, Florida, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington, D.C. About 35,000 people work there.

Though Wawa’s original dairy farm was in the community of Wawa, the company apparently started as an iron foundry in New Jersey in 1803, according to the Wawa website.

Wawa will be joining Philadelphia transplants Rita’s Water Ice, which has several franchises in the Charlotte area, as well as Lee’s Hoagie House, which opened a franchise in Lake Wylie, S.C.
