New fundraising disclosures are offering the first glimpse into the finances of the candidates for Pennsylvania governor, and while the Democratic primary already has a clear favorite, the Republican race is still up for grabs, write Chris Brennan and Andrew Seidman for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
State Attorney General Josh Shapiro managed to raise a whopping $13.4 million in 2021, a figure that most likely exceeds the entire GOP field. He ended the year with $13.5 million in the bank, which has put the GOP on notice.
“Josh Shapiro will have a ton of money, and we’re going to need to be able to raise it,” said Jake Corman, a Republican who entered the race in November, during a recent primary debate.
Shapiro received the funds from a large number of small-dollar donors as well as contributors with deeper pockets and special interests. This includes $500,000 from the Carpenters Union in Philadelphia and $200,000 from Local 19 of the Sheet Metal Workers Union in Philadelphia.
Meanwhile, Montgomery County Commissioner Joe Gale who is running in the Republican primary raised around $40,000 last year and used most of it.
