The life sciences industry in the region is experiencing explosive growth, with expectations that the need for jobs in cell therapy, gene therapy, and gene editing sectors will triple over the next decade, writes Ilene Raymond Rush for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

To ensure there is no shortage of qualified employees, the Jefferson Institute of Bioprocessing in Lower Gwynedd is training graduate students, engineers, scientists, and technicians in bioprocessing.

These procedures involve working with living cells or components of cells to develop treatments.

The institute recently received a grant from the Commonwealth’s Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program for the initiative.

The $2 million will allow the facility to expand its academic and training space by nearly 40,000 square feet.

“Some of the best opportunities for growth in the manufacturing area for advanced vaccines and cell and gene therapies are right here in Philadelphia,” said Parviz Shamlou, the institute’s executive director. “That’s where we come in.”

Shamlou emphasized the importance of opening the biopharma training center to Black and underrepresented communities and expressed hope that program’s graduates will remain in the region.
