‘Humbled’ and ‘Overwhelmed’ Jay Wright Makes It Into Hall of Fame

Villanova basketball coach Jay Wright has made it into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, writes Joe Juliano for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

On Sunday, his name was included among 15 others for the Class of 2021.

“When I got the call, it was stunning, it was emotional, it was humbling,” Wright said Sunday night.

The emotions didn’t wane Saturday during the 2020 enshrinement ceremony in Springfield, Mass. when he watched the ceremony with his other classmates.

“Then today [Sunday] with the announcement, it’s pretty overwhelming.” Wright has earned the Hall of Fame honors. He’s one of the top head coaches in college basketball.

He’s won 612 games and two national championships for Villanova in 2016 and 2018.

He had a 27-year coaching career, seven at Hofstra and 20 at Villanova.

Wright’s record with the Wildcats is 90-189. That includes four consecutive 30-victory seasons from 2014-15 to 2017-18. He’s the first NCAA coach to accomplish it.

He’s still trying to get used to his Hall of Fame status.

“I’m not sure what that’s supposed to feel like, to be honest with you,” he said. “You’re overwhelmed.”
