At-home hair color giant Madison Reed has opened two Color Bars in Montgomery County during the pandemic, the first one in September in the King of Prussia Town Center and the second one on March 2 in Ardmore’s Suburban Square, writes Caroline O’Halloran for the Savvy Main Line.

Madison Reed saw sales of its DIY salon-quality, low-chemical color formulas explode 12-fold when salons closed last spring. The company is now expanding its reach with “bars” that offer quick touch-ups and balayage (“painted on”) highlights but no haircuts.

“We knew we had a large online following in the area and KOP and Suburban Square are a great match to our demographic,” said Madison Reed founder and CEO Amy Errett.

Deciding to go into a brick-and-mortar business amid the pandemic was an easy decision for the company.

“We had a massive uptick in business in our online side. It became abundantly clear that women are going to color their hair no matter what,” said Errett.

By entering the brick-and-mortar market now, the company will have “the best locations with the best demographics” once life returns to normal, she added.
