Lower Merion High School Students are ‘Helping the Hungry Virtually’

By

A group of Lower Merion Township high school students are helping to combat hunger during the coronavirus pandemic through the local chapter of “Helping the Hungry Virtually,” writes Jennifer Heller for 6abc.

The organization is run by teenagers from all across the nation. The local chapter was started by seventeen-year-old Thea Kerekes, of Lower Merion High School.

Helping the Hungry Virtually.

Kerekes and four of her friends work on getting online donations and distributing these raised funds to families who need short-term assistance by the way of gift cards to grocery stores.

However during her work with the organization, Kerekes has seen just how deep the roots of hunger really run.

“It’s not an issue we can solve overnight,” she said. “Everyone in our community has to get on board with, to effectively fight food insecurity in our community.”

The national organization has so far managed to raise over $11,000 and help more than 150 families buy much needed groceries.
