Bryn Mawr Billionaire Sells Online-Shopping Platform, Buys Pro and College Teams Logo Manufacturer

By

Bryn Mawr billionaire Michael Rubin, CEO of Conshohocken-based Kynetic, has sold ShopRunner, his online-shopping platform, to FedEx, writes Joseph N. DiStefano for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

About a week later, he purchased Minnesota-based WinCraft, the manufacturing firm that has been producing items with the logos of pro and college teams for the past six decades.

The company fits in well with Rubin’s Fanatics, which is a dominant force in the sale of products tied to the world of sports. The acquisition has also helped make Fanatics an increasingly homegrown manufacturer after previously outsourcing the majority of production to lower-cost countries.

Rubin did not disclose the financial terms of either transaction. However, he did reveal that earlier he had sold 5.6 percent of Fanatics’ shares to investors for $350 million. This puts the value of the company at over $6 billion.

Proceeds from the stock sale were used for the WinCraft acquisition as well as in the recent purchase of Top of the World, a maker of caps and scarves for colleges based in Oklahoma. The purchase helped save the company’s factory allowing 200 laid-off employees to return to work.
