Growing Diversity in Pennsylvania Means Trump Has to Make Gains in ‘Suburban Philadelphia’ to Win the State

The increasing diversity in Pennsylvania could have a significant impact on the 2020 presidential election, writes Katie Meyer for the WITF.

Demographic data shows that President Trump cannot rely on the same coalition as he did four years ago.

This is due to a decline in the number of “white, non-college voters”. Meanwhile Latino, Black, and Asian residents make up a growing share of the voter base.

In Montgomery County for example, over the last three years the population grew by 11,124 residents. The county’s Black population increased by 3,963, Hispanics by 4,246, and the Asian population grew by 4,376 people. Unfortunately for the president, the white population decreased by 2,819.

In 2016, Trump achieved a huge swing of 29 percent in his favor among white, non-college voters. But for this year, that swing needs to be even larger.

“He has to hold his base, that’s absolutely certain,” said Chris Borick, who runs the Muhlenberg College Institute of Public Opinion. “But he also has to grow it, so he needs to find areas to do it, including marginal gains in places like Philadelphia and suburban Philadelphia.”
