The magic of live theater arrived at Elmwood Park Zoo in Norristown with the Prism Theatre’s production of “Tarzan: The Musical,” writes Alexandria Hoff for the CBS Philly.

The local theater company performed the premiere of the show on Friday on a custom-built outdoor stage on the grounds of the zoo. However the journey to that point was anything but simple.

“First of all we were going to open in July, then in August,” said Troy Cooper, producing artistic director with the Prism Theatre Center. “Then we were going to open inside, then we were going to open outside.”

Finally, they decided to partner with the zoo allowing the performance to proceed amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Once we figured out that we could try to do this in a matter that would be as safe as possible for our cast we went ahead and moved forward,” said Cooper.

To keep everybody safe, the company has implemented social distancing, sanitizing, and masks that are worked into their costumes.

Audiences can watch the show from socially-distanced outdoor seating or their car drive-in style. The show is running Thursdays through Sundays until September 27.
