Milan Salad Dressing Is an Old Time Favorite in the Philadelphia Region
Meet the DiBattista family, producers of Philly’s Original Milan salad dressing, available in stores throughout the Tri-state area and beyond, writes Peg DeGrassa for the Daily Times.
“All my life I’ve heard about the Milan salad my dad and grandfather made famous at their ‘Milan’ restaurant,” explained Jimmy DiBattista. “My dream, since the restaurant closed, was to carry our family legacy forward through the Milan salad dressing in bottled form so everyone can enjoy it at home.”
Grandson Vincent Anthony “Jimmy” DiBattista teamed up with his aunt, Maria DiBattista Bartorillo of Drexel Hill and former daughter-in-law Ann Conlin back in 2015 to market the dressing created by her father, Jimmy’s grandfather, Vincent Anthony DiBattista.
The Milan salad is a 1950s creation at Jimmy’s Milan, the former supper club in Philadelphia owned by Vincent DiBattista.
The salad is made up of iceberg lettuce, tossed in the Milan dressing, topped with chunks of tomato, bacon, shrimp and hard boiled eggs.
The dressing is a creamy mix of Italian and Thousand Island, with added spices.
Locally, you can find the salad, with variations, at 25 area restaurants, including Teca in Newtown Square and the Overbrook Golf Club in Radnor.
