Mike DeHaven, a Merck molecular scientist working on vaccine clinical trials, and Mary Ashmore, a labor and delivery nurse at Christiana Care in Delaware, had their dream wedding amid the pandemic, writes Kellie Patrick Gates for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The pair met on Tinder and bonded over their joint love of all things Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and Harry Potter. But it was DeHaven’s enthusiastic reaction to interests they did not share that made Ashmore fall in love with him.
In October 2018 at Longwood Gardens, DeHaven popped the question.
They set April 3, 2020, as their wedding date. Then the coronavirus pandemic happened, and both found their work increase to an unprecedented pace.
Still, they kept making preparations for their wedding, turning a big event with 130 invitees into a cozy affair transmitted over Zoom to family members who were not able to attend.
The couple’s first dance is one of the bride’s favorite memories, “because it felt so normal,” she said.
“It was exactly the moment we would have had, had we been able to have our big wedding then.”
