Inspired by the protests against racism and police brutality, volunteers have created a database of black-owned Philadelphia area restaurants that includes four eateries in Montgomery County, writes Danya Henninger for the Billy Penn.

Black-owned restaurants are rarely awarded the attention showered on the rest of the dining scene in the Philadelphia area, but some local food writers and editors have been busy working to change that.

“There has been a huge push to show more representation in the dining world,” said Kae Lani Palmisano, a USA Today 10 Best editor and host of “Check, Please Philly!” on WHYY-TV.

Following a nationwide trend, Palmisano and collaborator Jenn Hall have started a database to unify Philadelphia-area information available across several apps that highlight black-owned restaurants.

Then, their spreadsheet was turned into a map by Charles Rumford.

In Montgomery County, Go Vegan Philly in Conshohocken, Rose Petals Café in Elkins Park, Buutchiis Grille in Ambler, and Philly Cheesecake Lady, also in Elkins Park, are currently featured on the map.

Now as the spreadsheet grows with new entries, the map will also continue to update.
