During his visit to Pottstown last week, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Andrew Wheeler announced a new grant to clean up Pottstown Mercury building, writes Frank Kummer for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The grant is a part of $6.9 million in new funding for brownfields projects nationwide where communities work with the EPA to clean up and reuse polluted sites.

“The heart of this and what we are trying to do across the agency,” said Wheeler, “is working with communities to improve the environment where people live.”

The 12,000-square-foot building is in the center of Pottstown. However as it was considered a health hazard, it was closed two years ago by Digital First Media, its owner.

Over the last two years, the building has been partially remediated using funds from the Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund. Now, Montgomery County will receive a further $300,000 in supplemental funding for the project.

According to Wheeler, the site will be converted into a boutique hotel that will both create jobs and produce tax revenue.

Montgomery County is also receiving an additional $300,000 for several other redevelopment projects, including three in Pottstown and one in Norristown.
