Several local companies are currently developing tools that are helping to modernize COVID-19 testing, writes Queen Muse for the Philadelphia Magazine.

While the basics of modern clinical trials have not changed in almost three centuries, including using placebos and documenting every step of the process, there are other parts of the process that are ripe for modernization.

To discover which are the biggest issues in coronavirus clinical trials, the staff of King of Prussia-based Greenphire surveyed more than 1,800 clinical trial site personnel around the globe about the impact of COVID-19. The software company found that more than 60 percent of the testing sites did not have access to a service that could safely transport medical equipment and medicine to the homes of trial participants.

To address this issue, Greenphire launched ConneX Patient Direct in April. The service provides “clean transport” for medication, equipment, and healthcare professionals to visit patients’ homes.

Collecting data with pen and paper is another issue that has since been addressed by Horsham-based Clinical Ink. The clinical technology company has developed Direct Data Capture, a technology platform that enables clinical trial personnel to capture patient data digitally from day one.
