Elmwood Park Zoo is continuing to find ways to deliver live zoo programming to the public even during the coronavirus pandemic.

The zoo is organizing a new fundraiser, “Giraffeathon,” during which Elmwood Park Zoo staff will be collecting small donations online and over the phone in exchange for individual giraffe feedings during the live stream. Viewers will be able to purchase virtual giraffe feedings as well as donate higher amounts to support the zoo.

The fundraiser will be hosted by Al Zone, Elmwood Park Zoo’s Executive Director and CEO.

It will also include the zoo’s educators, keepers, and vet staff sharing fun facts with the viewers and providing demonstrations of training sessions that help keep the zoo’s giraffes happy and healthy.

Giraffeathon will take place on Friday, April 3, at 2:00 p.m.

The zoo’s operations have been severely hit by the temporary closure. It is losing around $18,000 a day in revenue and has been forced to lay off some of its staff and freeze all but essential spending. In case the gates remain closed through the end of April, the zoo estimates it will lose nearly a million dollars.
