Germantown -based Viva Leaf Tea, owned by Christa Barfield, brings a “farm to cup” experience to customers at the farmers market in Elkins Park, writes Brandon T. Harden for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Barfield, who starts each day with a cup of hot tea, fell in love with a beverage two years ago after traveling to the Caribbean island of Martinique. Her hosts prepared hot tea for her every day from live herbs in their garden.

“It was very different from what we do in America,” said Barfield. “The tea definitely had a fresher taste.”

She started her company as soon as she returned to Philadelphia.

“I started a tea company for wellness reasons,” she said. “It helped me to keep my 10 years of health-care experiences and reincarnate it in my own way.”

Barfield grows every herb, plant, and flower she uses in her tea blends, such as rosemary, mint, and lavender, in a greenhouse in Germantown. She creates the blends in commercial kitchens located in Germantown and Roxborough.

With each order, she provides information on the origins of the herbs and their possible health benefits.
