Owners of Bryn Mawr Rugs Trying to Survive Crash of Oriental Carpet Market with Heavy Discounts, Smaller Rugs

By

Despite the crash of the Oriental carpet market, the Tehrani brothers, Reuben, Youda, and Benjamin, are keeping their Bryn Mawr Rugs store open by offering heavy discounts and smaller rugs, writes Bob Fernandez for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The market has been devastated by automation, younger generations opting for modern designs, Amazon, and a rut glut caused by the downsizing older generations putting their decorative Oriental rugs up for sale.

If that were not enough, the brothers were forced to change the name of their store last year from Tehrani Brothers during the tensions with Iran after several threats and acts of vandalism against them.

But despite all this, the store in Bryn Mawr is still standing, four decades after the brothers opened their first rug shop in Rosemont.

However, the prices are significantly different. A large rug that would have sold for $100,000 a decade ago is now $40,000. There are also plenty of small rugs that sell for between $500 and $600.

“They are the lowest prices ever in the history of the antique Persian rug market,” Reuben said.
