Montgomery County Nonprofit To Hit Major Milestone at Community Service Event

By

The Giving Tree, a Montgomery County nonprofit organization, expects to hit a major milestone at the upcoming community service Helping Hands event on March 14th at Wissahickon Middle School.

Doors are open to the public at 10:00 AM. Event organizers expect to hit the milestone of 10,000 Peace and Smiles Boxes® around 11:00 AM.

A Peace and Smiles Box® is a signature creation by the organization. It is an empty cereal box filled with craft items wrapped and decorated with happy thoughts and well wishes for children in crisis situations.

“In many situations the recipients are feeling lonely, scared or sad. The Peace & Smiles Box® is such a welcomed distraction bringing a little bit of peace and a whole lot of smiles,” said Giving Tree founder Bridget Leary.

Keeping in line with the Giving Tree’s mission of teaching youth the importance of community service and giving back, the Peace & Smiles Boxes® are assembled by children ages 5-16.

The first box was delivered April of 2012 and since many more have been delivered to more than 70 hospitals and nonprofits over the past eight years.

Online registration is available here. There is a $5 fee per participant.
