From picking the perfect spot to packing tasty treats, here is everything you need to plan a fun picnic in Montgomery County, writes Julia King for the Valley Forge Tourism and Convention Board.

Picking a Park

Montgomery County has some of the most scenic picnic spots. Betzwood Park in Valley Forge Park has multiple tables, bathrooms, and plenty of grassy spots to set up your picnic. The park is right along the Schuylkill River.

Another prime spot is the Fort Washington State Park with its almost 500 acres of beautiful park land. At the Flourtown and Militia Hill day-use areas, there are plenty of picnic tables and open playfields for some summertime fun.

At Lower Perkiomen Valley Park, you can take advantage of the picnic pavilions, playgrounds, and scenic views along Perkiomen Creek. At Upper Schuylkill Valley Park, you can enjoy a seasonal butterfly garden and educational displays of wild animals.

Packing Your Picnic Basket

No matter what you are craving, Montgomery County eateries have plenty of great picnic staples.

At the Grand Fromage in Skippack, you can get a wide variety of cheeses, dried meats, crackers, and bread sticks. Be sure to also try their cherry bourbon chipotle spread and blueberry balsamic drizzled over creamy brie.

The Cheese Company in Narberth also offers classic cheeses and dried meats, as well as freshly made sandwiches.

If you want a more elevated picnic experience, visit Di Bruno Bros in Ardmore, for your picnic staples and don’t forget the tarragon Dijon mustard, caramelized onions, stuffed peppers and Marcona almonds.

For hoagies, cheesesteaks, or tomato pie, be sure to drop by Corropolese Italian Bakery & Deli in Norristown.

And don’t forget something sweet to complete your meal. Beverly’s Pastry Shop in Pottstown sells colorful French macarons, and the Pie and Plate in Ambler serves up individual slices of their house made pies. Their key lime pie and chocolate chip cookie cheesecake pie are very popular.
