Joan S. Randolph, a leader in the nursing field, died on Feb. 22 at Rydal Park, a senior community in Jenkintown, at age 84, writes Bonnie L. Cook for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Randolph was born in Philadelphia. She graduated from John Bartram High School before getting her degree from Jefferson School of Nursing.

She started her nursing career at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

For the next four decades, she worked as a nurse, a nursing supervisor, and vice president of nursing and patient services. She finally decided to retire in 2000.

“She was very passionate about nursing and mentoring new nurses,” said her family in a statement.

Her influence was not limited to nursing. For 25 years, she was also a board member and adviser for the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau.

She started the bureau’s Nursing Leadership Committee in 1994, which she chaired until 2017. During her tenure, Philadelphia was host to 30 nursing meetings.

For her commitment to promoting the city as a nursing-convention site, she was honored with the PHL Life Sciences Ultimate Solution Award in 2014.
