The movement to achieve menstrual equity in Pennsylvania is gaining steam, with the first National Period Day scheduled for October 19 and legislative support from State Sen. Maria Collett, writes Anna Orso for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Menstrual equity stems from the idea that too few policies account for the half of the population that menstruates once a month.

The efforts surrounding the movement nationwide have led dozens of states to consider measures that would eliminate taxes on menstrual products as well as improve access to these products in public facilities.

However, getting politicians to supports period-related initiatives can be hard due to the stigma that still surrounds the issue. But the Montgomery County representative in the state senate has no such qualms.

“Let me do it,“ said Collett, who plans to introduce a bill this week modeled off federal legislation that mandates free menstrual products in schools, prisons, and shelters.

Also, the bill allows menstrual products to qualify under Medicaid coverage as well as a medical expense that can be reimbursed under a flexible spending arrangement.
