Make sure to look at your dollar bills carefully before handing them over, as some of them might be worth thousands thanks to a printing error, writes Joe Hiti for KYW Newsradio.
Some coin and currency collectors in the U.S. are willing to pay thousands of dollars for $1 bills from specific 2014 and 2016 printing batches that contain an error made by the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
“It’s very rare that the Federal Reserve would mess up an order, and then it reaches circulation,” said Chad Hawk, the vice president of PMG, a professional paper money grading company. “You just don’t see that error in U.S. currency.”
The two batches that were printed two years apart contained the same serial numbers. That means that over 6 million $1 bills were misprinted and put into circulation before it was determined that a mistake had occurred.
The currency collectors are now on a hunt for the bills from each batch in the hopes of collecting matching pairs. While they are not worth much separately, the last matched pairing sold for around $6,000.
