All five members of the Radnor Board of Commissioners present Monday night voted against a new Wawa convenience store with gas pumps for the corner of Lancaster and Aberdeen avenues, writes Linda Stein for mainlinemedianews.com.

Plans for the Wawa had drawn opposition from nearby neighbors who fought against it for more than a year.

In April, the township Planning Commission recommended that the Board of Commissioners reject the proposal, which would fuse two parcels into a combined 1.7-acre parcel. Both parcels already have gas stations.

The developers met with community members and introduced two other plans addressing some of the residents’ suggestions to make the Wawa safer and more aesthetically pleasing but residents continued to oppose the redevelopment, citing traffic, noise, light pollution and safety issues for students attending St. Katharine of Siena and Radnor Middle schools.

Nicolas Caniglia, the lawyer for the developer, argued that the Wawa development is a by-right plan and pointed out an existing nonconformity would be reduced with gas pumps cut from 12 to six.

Caniglia said that his client plans to appeal developer’s case to the Delaware County Court of Common Pleas.
