ABC: Baldwin’s Book Barn, a West Chester Staple Since 1934, One of Largest Used Book Stores in the World

With its more than 300,000 used books, Baldwin’s Book Barn, a West Chester staple since 1934, remains one of the largest used book stores in the world, writes Amanda Brady for ABC.

A bookworm’s dream, the store offers 25,000 square feet of books – including rare and old literature – spread over five floors.

The oldest book available at the store dates back to the 17th century. However, there are books in every category imaginable.

The store was established by William Baldwin, who bought the barn in 1946. At the time, it was not only a book store but also offered general goods. Baldwin focused primarily on the book side of the business.

People from all over the area started donating their books, soon making the store one of the largest in the country.

When Baldwin died, the barn continued to be run by his family.

Today, it draws booklovers from all over the world who sometimes return for several days in a row to continue perusing its extensive collection.

“They’re in awe when they walk in here,” said the owner.
