Bryce Harper begins his 13 year contract with the Phillies holding a bat made by Victus, a King of Prussia company.

The latest issue of Sport’s Illustrated shows Harper front and center holding a bat with the Victus logo engraved on the front, writes John George of Philadelphia Business Journal. “We don’t have an exclusive deal with him, but I’d say he uses one of our bats 70 to 80 percent of the time.,”said Jared Smith, co-founder of Victus.

Ryan Engroff, the other Victus Sports co-founder, said his reaction to the magazine cover was pure elation. “It was great and surprising,” Engroff said. “Our relationship with him is so good we didn’t even have to ask him to do that. He did it on his own.”

Smith and Engroff introduced themselves to Harper a few years ago in the Nationals’ locker room.  Harper handed them an older model of the bat he was using, and asked the two bat makers to “make it better”. The bat was a Marucci CU7, a combination of Chase Utley’s(CU) barrel and Mets infielder Jose Reyes'(No.7) handle, writes Matt Breen of Philly.com.

“We are in the constant search for a perfect model for Bryce,” Smith said. “He’s a feel guy, and there’s definitely guys who are that way. There’s plenty of times where he may pick up something different that day, and it just feels better for one reason or the other. We’ve done dozens and dozens of different models for him.”
