Jenkintown is taking a step toward sustainability with a new ordinance aimed at reducing plastic waste across the borough.
According to a press release, the measure was passed by the Jenkintown Borough Council with support from the Environmental Advisory Committee. It will take effect on July 23.
Under the new rules, businesses will no longer be permitted to provide single-use plastic bags. Instead, customers can bring their own bags or purchase recycled or reusable paper bags for a minimum fee of 10 cents.
The ordinance also addresses plastic utensils, requiring businesses to offer compostable straws and stirrers unless a plastic option is specifically requested. Certain residents, including those using SNAP, WIC, or TANF benefits, will be exempt from bag fees.
Businesses must begin posting signage by April 22 to inform customers of the upcoming changes. Borough officials say the initiative is designed to reduce litter, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and protect local waterways and wildlife.
The move reflects a broader push across Montgomery County, as Jenkintown is the latest in a series of towns to pass similar ordinances.
