Hatboro police recently found themselves investigating a crime that was anything but typical, an unusual theft involving 96 bananas from a local Wawa, writes Fernando Cervantes Jr. for USA Today.
According to authorities, two men stole the fruit from the Hatboro convenience store before fleeing the scene in a vehicle. Surveillance footage helped police quickly identify the suspects, bringing a swift end to what officers jokingly referred to as a case of “banana bandits.”
The suspects later took responsibility, telling investigators the incident was a “drunken mistake.” Rather than pursuing charges, the resolution remained straightforward: the individuals repaid the store in full, satisfying the business and closing the case.
Police noted the situation was a first of its kind, with one officer remarking he had never encountered a theft involving that many bananas. While the motive remains unclear, the outcome was simple—no arrests, no charges, and no lingering issues for the Hatboro location.
For Montgomery County residents, the bizarre episode is a reminder that even in quieter communities, not every police report follows the usual script.
