For Josh Shapiro, this year’s Passover carried a deeper meaning, writes Gillian McGoldrick for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
One year after an arson attack targeted the governor’s mansion while his family was inside, the Pennsylvania governor reflected on resilience, faith, and the challenges of leadership.
The 2025 attack exposed significant security vulnerabilities at the Harrisburg residence, prompting a sweeping response. The state has since invested millions into security at both the governor’s mansion and Shapiro’s personal home in Abington Township. Upgrades include enhanced surveillance and physical barriers.
Despite the trauma, Shapiro and his family returned to the mansion to host this year’s Passover Seder, a symbolic gesture underscoring their commitment to moving forward. The event, attended by community leaders and guests, served as both a celebration and a moment of reflection following the widely condemned act of political violence.
Shapiro has continued to speak out against political violence and rising antisemitism, emphasizing unity across faiths. In the aftermath of the attack, he has leaned more heavily into his Jewish faith and public service, even as ongoing threats remain a reality.
For the Abington native, the experience has reshaped his perspective, but not his resolve. Shapiro has reinforced his commitment to leadership while ensuring his family’s safety remains a priority.
