Telford’s Rising Sun Inn Has Great Food and Stories of Liberty Bells and Prohibition

The Rising Sun Inn in Telford offers an eclectic menu and creative drinks, but its real draw may be the centuries of stories within.

The Rising Sun Inn in Telford offers an eclectic American-inspired menu and creative drinks, but its real draw may be the centuries of stories that its walls hold, writes Nikki DeMentri and Bill Seiders for CBS News Philadelphia.

“This building was built in 1739 by Peter Gerhart,” said Rising Sun Inn General Manager Theresa Paci. “A lot of stories. Ghost stories, families, births, deaths, parties – all of them. Liberty Bells, Underground Railroads, Prohibition.”

The Liberty Bell spent a night at the Inn while being transported to Allentown to protect it from the British during the Revolutionary War.

The historic establishment also has many other fascinating stories, including its involvement during Prohibition.

“The owner during that time went to jail multiple times for concealing alcohol here and having it hidden and not turning it over and kept continuing to serve the community,” said Paci.

The illegal alcohol was stored in a room that was kept safely concealed behind a false wall.

Throughout its history, the Rising Sun Inn at one time was also a stop on the Underground Railroad.
