Safe Harbor at Jefferson Abington Hospital Marks 25 Years of Grief Support for Children, Families

Safe Harbor at Jefferson Abington marks 25 years of providing support to children, teens, and caregivers grieving the loss of a loved one.

Safe Harbor at Jefferson Abington recently marked 25 years of providing support to children, teens, and caregivers grieving the loss of a loved one, writes Dino Ciliberti for the Patch.

Using support groups, as well as art, music, and movement activities, the program provides a safe space where individuals and families can share their experiences and begin to heal. Its mission is grounded in the belief that nobody should face grief alone, and that experiencing loss alongside others in similar circumstances can bring comfort.

The Willow Grove home of Safe Harbor provides spacious, family-friendly spaces, including art, music, and playrooms, a caregiver support room, and a resource library. Its walls showcase years of artwork by children and teens, creating a welcoming and comforting environment.

Through its School Outreach Program, the initiative also assists school counselors in learning the best ways to support students coping with grief.

Meanwhile, Camp Charlie takes place each June at the Temple Ambler campus, giving children in the program an opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities and games.

The program celebrated its 25th anniversary of helping families heal by creating memorial flags honoring their lost loved ones.
