A proposed power transmission line in Limerick Township is adding a new layer to the ongoing debate surrounding data center development, writes Justin Heinze for Patch.
The project would include a mile-long electrical line crossing the Schuylkill River, connecting infrastructure from PECO’s Lock Substation in East Coventry to existing lines near the Limerick Generating Station. The line would ultimately help power a controversial data center proposed along Sanatoga Road.
Community advocates and environmental groups say the plan raises fresh concerns about infrastructure strain and environmental impact, particularly as data center development accelerates across the region. Critics have pointed to increased demands on the electric grid and water supply, as well as potential noise and air pollution tied to large-scale facilities.
The proposal has also drawn attention due to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s decision not to schedule a public hearing. That decision has prompted calls for residents to submit public comments ahead of an April 20 deadline.
State Sen. Katie Muth has urged community members to push for a hearing, emphasizing the importance of public input as the project moves forward.
Locally, the proposal underscores a broader challenge: balancing economic development with environmental concerns as data center projects continue to take shape in communities like Limerick.
