Montgomery County officials are moving forward with early plans to create a centralized recycling drop-off facility, writes Rachel Ravina for The Reporter.
The long-requested resource would make it easier for residents to responsibly dispose of hard-to-recycle items.
Last week, county leaders approved a request for proposals seeking design consulting services for the project. The envisioned facility would accept a wide range of materials, including cardboard, plastics, glass, electronics, scrap metal, textiles, and potentially even organic yard and food waste.
Officials say the goal is to streamline recycling while expanding options beyond traditional curbside programs.
“It’s something that our residents across Montgomery County have asked for and wanted for a very long time,” said Jamila Winder, chair of the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners.
The project is still in its early stages, with no final site or timeline announced. County officials are exploring grant funding through the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, which could cover up to 80% of costs. The selected consultant would also help develop an operational and business plan for the center.
In the meantime, Montco residents can take advantage of the county’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program, which hosts seasonal events for safe disposal of items like paint, gasoline, and batteries.
