Norristown’s Cavan Sullivan Makes History with The Union

Norristown’s Cavan Sullivan, 16, scores twice for the Union, becoming youngest American goalscorer in Champions Cup play.

Norristown’s own Cavan Sullivan continues to rewrite the record books, writes Dan Gelston for The Associated Press.

The 16-year-old midfielder scored his first two professional goals last Thursday, leading the Philadelphia Union to a 7-0 win over Defence Force FC in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. In the process, Sullivan became the youngest American to score in the tournament at 16 years, 4 months, 29 days.

The dominant performance helped Philadelphia advance 12-0 on aggregate and sets up a marquee matchup with Club América. Sullivan not only scored twice but also added two assists in what many are calling a breakout moment for the teenage sensation.

Sullivan is already considered one of MLS’s brightest young stars. He previously made headlines as one of the youngest players to debut in a major North American professional sports league.

His rise has drawn international attention, with a future move to Manchester City expected when he turns 18.

Still, the Montco native remains grounded, emphasizing team success over personal milestones. The Union now turn their focus to MLS play as they host New York City FC in their home opener.

Sullivan’s historic night marks another proud chapter in a rapidly unfolding career.
