Two new exhibits are opening at the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center in Pennsburg this month — one a history exhibit for commemorating the Semiquincentennial and the other an art show.
The first of our four exhibits for the commemoration of the country’s 250th —Who Lived in the Perkiomen Valley in the 1700s? — opens on Saturday, Feb. 14.
Meet the curator, Emma Hartman, from 10:00 AM-4:00 PM. At 11:00 AM and again at 2:00 PM, she will present “More Stories From the Archives,” sharing additional things learned during her research into the population of the region at the time of the Revolutionary War, with an emphasis on African Americans. During the day, she will guide people through how to use the large database she created during her year of research. The presentations are free and do not require a reservation. The exhibit was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
Additionally, the art show, Hex Signs, is open now for viewing. Come be amazed by these works of art created by Hunter M. Yoder, a hexologist and folk artist from Berks County. Yoder calls them “painted prayers,” as these traditional Pennsylvania Dutch barn stars incorporate symbols rooted in pre-Christian Germanic traditions. Yoder’s work incorporates runic inscriptions and plant geometry, drawing inspiration from historical hexologists like Johnny Ott and Lee R. Gandee. All of the works on display are on sale as well, so that you can add this art to your property.
The Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center at 105 Seminary Street, Pennsburg, is the regional history museum for the Upper Perkiomen Valley. Exhibits are on view Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 AM-4:00 PM, and Sunday from 1-4:00 PM, and admission is free. Find more information on upcoming programs and exhibits for the 250th here.
