Methacton Cheer Team Stuck in Texas — and Comes Home Stronger

Methacton High School’s cheer team returned home after days stranded in Texas by winter storms during their first NCA Nationals trip.

What was supposed to be a quick trip home turned into an unexpected adventure for the Methacton High School cheer team, reports Dawn Timmeney for Fox 29.

After traveling to Fort Worth, Texas, to compete in the NCA Nationals, the team found itself stranded for several days when a severe winter storm shut down flights across the region.

The cheerleaders arrived in Texas last Thursday, but the national competition was cut short as weather conditions worsened. Their planned Monday return was derailed by repeated cancellations and long delays, leaving the team stuck at the airport for nearly 18 hours. With limited options, the group eventually secured hotel rooms.

Despite the challenges, coaches and parents rallied to support the girls from afar. Hotel staff provided essentials like toothbrushes, while parents back home arranged DoorDash deliveries with items the team needed. Sophomore Sofia Buttaro said the experience was frustrating at times, especially sleeping on the airport floor, but spirits stayed high.

Coach Deana Ellison praised the team’s attitude throughout the ordeal, noting everyone looked out for one another. The trip marked the first time this group qualified for NCA Nationals, making the journey even more memorable.

When the team finally returned to Methacton, parents waited in the cold to welcome them home.
